On April 3, 2025, the Public Health Service Branch of the Chinese Geriatrics Society, in collaboration with the Civil Affairs Bureau of Yuexiu District, Guangzhou City, the Beijing Sub-district Office of Yuexiu District, and other parties, held a "Patriotic Health Month" Yuedu Yuexiu Community Elderly Reading Station Home Pest Control science popularization activity in Dufu Community, Beijing Street, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou City. This event takes the 37th Patriotic Health Month as an important opportunity, closely revolves around the theme of "Livable and Beautiful Home, Healthy New Life", and innovatively adopts a dual-wheel drive model of "scientific pest control + intangible cultural heritage inheritance", further extending the health protection network to the "last mile" of community governance. The event is deeply in line with the World Health Organization's global initiative of "Health for All", focusing on the problem of pest control at home for the elderly over 60 years old in the community. Through a three-dimensional framework of "expert lectures + physical demonstrations + cultural experiences", it integrates modern technology with traditional wisdom to help the elderly establish scientific pest control awareness and build a healthy lifestyle.
This science popularization activity takes "scientific protection + cultural inheritance" as its core design concept and creates a model of elderly-friendly health services through three dimensions. In terms of professionalism, Wang Haifeng, a senior engineer from the Institute of Zoology, Guangdong Academy of Sciences, systematically explained the identification characteristics and ecological habits of common household pests such as cockroaches and mosquitoes. By combining the preparation of environmentally friendly pesticides and practical demonstrations of physical pest control tools, he provided the elderly with practical pest control solutions. In response to the recent high incidence of red imported fire ant bites, an emergency response teaching module has been specially added on site to enhance the safety protection awareness of the elderly group through scenario simulation. It is worth noting that the event particularly incorporates elements of traditional Cantonese culture and sets up a workshop for making "mugwort sachets". Under the guidance of social workers, participants mixed dried mugwort with spices and hand-hammered them to make traditional insect repellent sachets. This design that combines intangible cultural heritage skills with modern pest control needs not only inherits the folk culture of the Cantonese region but also adds a natural protective barrier to the home environment, earning unanimous praise from the elderly.
This event, as the first community health practice of the 2025 Patriotic Health Month series of activities led by the Public Health Service Branch of the Chinese Geriatrics Society, not only provided practical pest control knowledge and skills for the elderly in the community, but also explored an innovative path for the construction of elderly-friendly healthy communities through in-depth collaboration among government, industry, academia and research. The event attracted nearly 30 community residents to participate. The atmosphere on the spot was lively. The elderly all expressed that they had benefited a lot and looked forward to more such beneficial activities being implemented in the community in the future.
