On March 1, 2025, the "Academic Conference on Enhancing Competence in Geriatric Pharmacy Services and the Preparatory Meeting of the Pharmacy Management and Pharmacy Services Branch of the Chinese Geriatrics Society" was successfully held, hosted by the Preparatory Committee of the Pharmacy Management and Pharmacy Services Branch of the Chinese Geriatrics Society. President Fan Li of the Chinese Geriatrics Society delivered a speech, Vice President and Secretary-General Xu Xiaodong, and Deputy Secretary-General Zhao Jicheng were present to offer guidance. Experts and scholars from multiple hospitals and research institutions across the country gathered together to jointly explore the development path of geriatric pharmacy services, promote the establishment of the branch, and inject new impetus into enhancing the medication safety and health management level of the elderly population in China.

Professor Fan Li, the president of the Chinese Society of Geriatrics, pointed out that as the degree of aging in China deepens, the issue of medication safety for the elderly has become a major topic in the construction of a Healthy China. The establishment of the Pharmaceutical Affairs Management and Pharmaceutical Services Branch is timely. She emphasized: "The branch should become an academic leader, a practical promoter and a policy advisor, injecting lasting impetus into the development of geriatric pharmacy in our country!"
Ii. Academic Leadership: Focusing on Innovation in Elderly Pharmacy Services
The conference invited Professor Yang Yong from Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital, Professor Zhao Zhenyu from Zhu Xianyi Hospital of Tianjin Medical University, and Professor Zhao Zhigang from Tiantan Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University to focus on the theme of competence in elderly pharmacy services. The significant role of pharmaceutical services in the health management of elderly patients and special populations was demonstrated respectively from different perspectives such as pharmaceutical clinics, medication management for special populations, and intelligent pharmaceutical services. It not only enhanced the level of rational drug use and promoted the realization of precise management, but also provided an innovative path for the health management of special populations under the background of the new medical reform. It has profound significance for improving the overall quality of medical services and safeguarding patients' health.
Iii. Branch Establishment: Build Consensus and Anchor Development Direction
Vice Secretary-General Zhao Jicheng of the Chinese Society of Geriatrics elaborately interpreted the requirements for the establishment of the branch, emphasizing that the branch will take "serving the national strategy and promoting healthy aging" as its core mission, build an academic exchange platform, and promote the standardization of pharmaceutical affairs management and pharmaceutical services. Professor Chen Mengli from the General Hospital of the People's Liberation Army reported on the preparation of the branch from aspects such as its necessity, organizational structure design, and future plans. She proposed to take "academic guidance, collaborative innovation, and resource integration" as the three pillars to build cross-disciplinary and multi-field cooperation. All the experts attending the meeting engaged in a lively discussion on topics such as the name of the branch, business scope, and member recruitment. Eventually, they reached a consensus that the branch will focus on the construction of elderly pharmacy service capabilities, policy research and practical transformation, form the characteristics of integrated development of medicine and pharmacy, and contribute to the construction of a nationwide elderly pharmacy service system.

Vice President and Secretary-General Xu Xiaodong of the Chinese Geriatrics Society highly affirmed the achievements of the preparatory work and pointed out that the branch needs to fully play its role as a bridge and link, comprehensively strengthen the integrated development of medicine and pharmacy, promote the transformation of geriatric pharmaceutical services from "disease treatment" to "health management", and drive high-quality drug research and development and clinical services through scientific and technological innovation.
