Geriatric Anesthesiology, published by the People's Medical Publishing House, was awarded the "Special Recommendation · Medical Discipline Category" book of "2024 Medical Good Books".

Introduction to Geriatric Anesthesiology

China has the largest elderly population in the world. By the end of 2023, there were 216.76 million elderly people aged 65 or above, accounting for 15.4 percent of the total population. China's aging speed is much faster than other countries, from entering the aging society to entering the deep aging society in 2023, China only took 23 years. In addition, the proportion of elderly people over 80 years old in China is increasing rapidly and is expected to reach 88 million by 2050.

The physical function of the elderly is declining, the incidence of disease is increasing, and the demand for medical treatment is growing, which not only puts higher requirements on the supply of medical resources, but also increases the pressure on the medical security system. 50% of elderly patients need surgery, but due to the effects of organ dysfunction, senile comorbidity, chronic medication, etc., the incidence of surgical complications is 2-4 times that of adults. Anesthesiologists are the mainstay of perioperative patient protection. How to guarantee the perioperative life quality of elderly patients is both an opportunity and a challenge for anesthesiologists.

"Geriatric Anesthesiology" is the first non-translated book specifically aimed at anesthesia and perioperative management of elderly patients in China. This book refers to international and domestic guidelines or expert consensus related to geriatric anesthesia, as well as the latest progress of anesthesia-related research in recent years. Experts with Chinese medicine, acupuncture and moxibustion qualifications and clinical experience were also invited to write about the application of Chinese medicine and acupuncture in the management of anesthesia in the elderly, highlighting the unique role of Chinese traditional medicine in the perioperative management of the elderly.

The book is divided into three 48 chapters, namely, the basic knowledge chapter, the clinical practice chapter and the postoperative management chapter, which cover the function changes of important organs in elderly patients and their influence on anesthesia, anesthesia management of elderly patients during operation (including both inside and outside the operation room), postoperative pain management and the prevention and treatment of complications. This paper systematically introduces the changes of vital organ function in the physiological (aging) process of the elderly, especially the debilitation of organ function and the influence of chronic drug use on anesthesia. It not only introduces the indicators and procedures for the evaluation and optimization of important organ function in the elderly patients before surgery, but also emphasizes the key points of intraoperative anesthesia management and postoperative management in the elderly patients.

The publication of "Geriatric Anesthesiology" will provide important reference and guidance for training Chinese geriatric anesthesiology professionals, and will have an important and far-reaching impact on improving the perioperative management level of elderly patients and improving the prognosis of elderly patients undergoing surgery.
